Wacky excuses for being late as Employers take notice of punctuality
21 June 2010
According to a survey carried out by the Career Builder website, 39% of business leaders in the UK reported they were paying more attention to what time workers arrived for work than they had before the economic downturn.
15% of employers said they would consider terminating the contract of an employee who was late two or three times while 12% would terminate if the employee was late four or five times.
European employers were also asked to share the most bizarre excuses workers had given to explain why they were late. Some of the most unusual included:
- “I was delayed by volcanic ash”
- “I was concerned about an impending comet impact”
- “A horse jumped over a hedge straight on top of my car”
- “The cat was stuck in the cat flap”
- “My house was on fire”
- “My car was blocked in by a stolen car and the police were taking fingerprints”
- “I had difficulty adjusting to the climate change from winter to summer”
- “Someone hid my teeth”
