Just a face in the crowd? – Video CV’s
02 September 2010
As men and women, young and old, fight to get jobs in the UK, one has to wonder when we will adopt the new American craze of the Video CV. As it stands Tom, Dick and Harry all have impressive paper CV’s but an employer only needs one of them, what makes who stand out?
More and more these days we are seeing a rise in Video CV’s within the application process of creative, media or journalism based jobs. These are simple, short, digital clips that you can do yourself. They allow the candidate to get across to their potential employer what they are like and give them a glimpse of what an interview would perhaps be like. For those with a less impressive paper résumé, it allows the candidate the opportunity perhaps to shine and get through to the next stage.
Recruitment Times statistics show us that in the Vault.com survey, 58 percent of employers surveyed said they would watch a video CV “out of sheer curiosity,” 31 percent responded, “definitely, I think they are valuable” and 11 percent said they would not watch because “it would not be useful.”
As we see the Big Brother reality television show reach its final days, it is interesting to think that the programmes entire selection process is done through video interviews. What you see is what you get. But is it? Could this be yet another way for candidates to exaggerate their personalities and best qualities?
There is always going to be the concerns that this becomes not an intellectual contest, or a contest of abilities but a beauty contest. Much like Reese Witherpooon’s character getting into Harvard Law School, in chick flick Legally Blonde on the back of a bikini driven video résumé. Many worry however that this form of job application could subject candidates to the discriminately subconscious.
However the CV / Application are ever changing, ultimately with the hope of finding the best candidate for the best company. The use of video within recruitment is something that a forward thinking agency like Yellow Cat Recruitment looks to be at the forefront of, as it develops and progresses.
