A Level Class of 2010, An A* fight for clearing… Is the working world so bad?
31 August 2010
As A Level results were released nationally this month there has been much talk in regional and National press as ever about this year’s results.
Many students who found themselves in clearing struggled to gain a place at University due to many not even participating in the clearing process. The introduction of the new A* grade has had a mixed reaction in regards to its success in being able to identify the cream of the country. Among the leading universities, Warwick and Imperial London are two examples that are asking for them this year while others have remained with the system they know and love. Discussions this year about student’s ability to retake their exams draws once again on the question of whether some of these students should even be going to university or should be considering other options.
According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) more students that are receiving their A level Results this year are looking to go into training schemes in the workplace, as opposed to being left with the debt of university fees. Their figures regarding applicants to their ‘HEADStart ‘scheme post A level has almost doubled since 2008.
Simone Llyod (HR Director at Santander) told Recruiter News that many students are struggling with the decision to whether they should go onto higher education or not, due to the whether the government imposes the new graduate tax scheme. Arguably if you are academically bright enough to go, you have a place and you want to continue learning- then go! The price of education in the UK has been high for a long time and if it’s an opportunity you will embrace for the right reasons then go. BBC figures still show that the average graduate will earn more than those that have not attended university. However that is ultimately dependant on the value of your degree, your university and your subject.
It is important to remember that university intake increases every year with the ongoing pressure for school or college leavers to go onto higher education. In many respects the cut on clearing and ‘higher/lower’ aspect of the A* grade is now giving young people the opportunity not to go.
