CV Advice
General Points
- Keep everything to 2 pages.
- Have a good structure; put sections under different sub headings.
- Use bullet points to ensure content is clear, structured, concise and relevant.
- Keep the same font and size throughout (apart from headings).
- Avoid using italics, bold too much, decorative borders and images.
- Check content carefully for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
- Tailor your CV to the job spec to emphasis your relevant skills and experience.
- Be truthful and realistic as false comments will only catch up with you in the interview.
- Remember when writing your CV you are marketing yourself to that particular company.
Sections within CV
- Personal Details Name, Address, Telephone Numbers, Email Address, Nationality etc.
- Personal Profile Short introduction (2 / 3 sentences) about yourself and current situation. Good to include your plans for the future as no other section allows this.
- Skills IT skills, Relevant Courses, Training, Languages, Driving License etc.
- Relevant Employment History Include all jobs relevant to what you are applying for. List most recent job at the top. Duties in bullet points. Gaps in career history explained.
- Other Employment History Include all other jobs you’ve done.
- Education & Qualifications List your most recent institution at the top and work backwards. Outline achievements & qualifications underneath each University / College…
- Achievements Include key achievements and certificates for extracurricular activities.
- Interests Include all hobbies and interests plus any unusual pastimes.
- Referees. Name, Position, Company/Institution, then write ‘Contact details on request’.
