PR Account Executive
Public Relations is the management of information between an organisation and its public. PR Account Executives gain exposure for an organisation or individual through news items, without advertising.
What does the job entail?
The work of a PR Account Executive varies from day to day depending on the area of PR they are working in. PR agencies tend to specialise in specific industry sectors, such as consumer, business-to-business (B2B), financial and healthcare. Tasks carried out by Account Execs include:
- Liaising with clients and the media
- Relationship building and networking
- Monitoring the media for opportunities for clients
- Preparing regular client reports
- Attending and promoting client events to the media.
Typical Career Routes
Account Executives play a key strategic role on accounts and are often able to take on varied responsibilities early in their careers depending on the size of the agency.
A good Account Executive should expect to be promoted to Senior Account Executive or Account Manager in two to three years. After a further three to four years at this level, individuals will usually have enough experience to progress to Account Director where they will have responsibility for high profile clients and all staff working on their account teams.

Training and Qualifications
Although candidates do not need a particular degree to enter PR, studying subjects such as English, Media Studies and Marketing Communications may improve your chances. Securing a relevant placement within a PR agency can provide valuable experience which will assist in finding a permanent position. Candidates should also try to gain PR experience in their spare time by writing for local media or helping to promote a local event.
