IT Support Officer
IT Support Officers monitor and maintain the computer systems and networks of an organisation. Organisations increasingly rely on computer systems in all areas of their operations and decision making processes. Failure of IT systems can lead to a complete inability of the organisation to deliver its services.
What does the job entail?
IT Support Officers are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of computer systems and ensuring users know how to use them. Duties will vary depending on the size and structure of the company, they will usually include:
- Installing and configuring computer hardware
- Monitoring and maintaining systems and networks
- Assisting colleagues / clients with any faults or issues that may arise
- Replacing parts as required and setting up new users’ accounts and profiles
Typical Career Routes
IT Support staff develop their careers by broadening their skills within a specific industry. Large companies with a large technical infrastructure may have separate teams to deal with different areas of their business. With experience it can be possible to move to a specialist area dealing with more complex technical environments or to a team leader position responsible for supervising staff.

Training and Qualifications
Although candidates do not need a particular degree to enter IT, subjects such as Business Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Business Systems Engineering may improve your chances.
Employers will usually look for in-depth knowledge of the programs and applications they use, typically Microsoft, Linux and Cisco technologies. They may also look for other specific qualifications such as the Microsoft Certified Software Engineer (MCSE) or the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA).
