Media & Creative Jobs

Runner

Post Production is a vital part of the process of making films, television programmes and commercials. It is the general term for all stages of production occurring after the actual end of shooting and/or recording.

In order to break into the Post Production industry the first step is usually to become a Runner.

What does the job entail?

Runners are often expected to be a jack of all trades as they perform many of their own duties as well as provide cover for other junior members of staff including Reception, Junior Tape Operators and Tape Librarians. Primarily however, the runners are there to provide a high level of client hospitality. Clients who frequent the facility often work very long hours and are usually catered for. Runners are responsible for preparing drinks, collecting lunches and ensuring the clients and senior staff members have everything they need.

Typical Career Routes

Runners should look to move up the ladder after 6 to 12 months. They will usually progress to Head Runner or to roles in operations, library or bookings. Ultimately they will look to become an Edit Assistant, Editor or Producer.

Key Skills

  • Strong communication skills
  • Precise attention to detail
  • Initiative and problem solving skills
  • Effective team working skills
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity when working with clients

Training and qualification

It is often believed that candidates looking to get into post production need to have a relevant degree but this is not the case. Many candidates entering Post Production with a media degree expect to be carrying out technical work straight away and struggle with the reality of making tea and delivering tapes in bad weather.

A bright, enthusiastic can-do attitude is the most important attribute. Experience of client or customer service work such as bar or retail work is also desirable. Runners will receive basic training so that they understand the basics of post production and hard workers are often rewarded with extra opportunities to learn.

I have been working with Yellow Cat since 2006 and they have always proved to be highly professional. They understand my needs and send me candidates that are relevant for the role. I am impressed with their approach in a market that is very competitive. They care about building long term relationships.
